Wedding Whiff |
|
Make time to find a special signature scent to remember your wedding by. BOEY PING PING sniffs out several fragrances to wear on your big day.
AROMA has a way of reviving memories, thoughts and feelings more vividly than a photograph. Certain smells remind us of mum's cooking, a day in the park, a romantic date or a special event. Fragrance can revive magical moments, which is why it's so important to take time to choose a wedding fragrance. If you scent your special day with an aroma you love, you'll be able to relive those memories anytime with just with a whiff of that scent.
Timeless and traditional
Whether it's held at a mosque, temple or church, most Malaysians love a traditional wedding because of their reverence for religion, culture and tradition. Traditional weddings revive dying traditions, are steeped in culture and always have the approval of the older folk.
Sarah Jessica Parker may seem to be far from traditional but her latest scent, Lovely, brings to mind all that is beautiful and charming - a string of pearls, a kiss, a white orchid, a pink ribbon. Like her personal style, Parker's Lovely is a flashback to the classics made modern with her twists on tradition. The silky white amber scent is a timeless concoction of fresh mandarin, lavender, creamy orchid and white amber.
A truly British fragrance, Burberry London is as classic as it gets - an elegant floral, with notes of rose and honeysuckle to evoke an English garden on a bright spring morning and zesty clementine to suggest crispness of the air.
The inspiration for Creed Love In White came to the creator whilst strolling in the forest. Olivier Creed says: "All the blossom was on the trees, the white narcissus were flowering, the sun was shining and I could feel winter lifting. It all looked so fresh and optimistic and I thought that this is how love begins, with everything to experience and anticipate, the beginning of something beautiful." The result was a gorgeous bouquet of fresh, creamy white florals.
Garden of Eden
Other than Mother Nature herself (read: rain, earthquakes and tsunamis), nothing can destroy the picture-perfect beauty of an outdoor wedding. With nature as your background, you'll enjoy an orchestra of chirping birds, a ceiling of fluffy white 'pillows' against a clear blue sky and inhale the smell of fresh, green grass. Let the scent and sight of soft, pink rose petals lead you to the altar, where you'll be transformed into husband and wife.
It was love at first bite, or rather second bite, for DKNY's second fragrance, Red Delicious (available in August). The bouquet captures the heart of a passionate relationship with a scent as intoxicating as love itself. Ripe with love, life and adventure, Red Delicious tempts with a glittering champagne accord and crisp apple, intensifying into a heart of rich, velvety rose before capping off with sweet raspberry.
Estee Lauder transports the wearer to a perfect, sunny spring day with Pure White Linen (available in August), a reinvention of White Linen with a touch of fruitiness. Like a perfect day captured in a bottle, Pure White Linen first slowly releases the dewy freshness of a radiant morning with grapefruit, granny smith apple and blooming lilies. Then red tulips blend with the velvety petals of rose and white flowers that mist the air with heady blossoms. It ends serenely with the seductive warmth and sensuality of white cedarwood and heliotrope.
Let love bloom with Clinique Happy In Bloom, a fresh floral scent that brings to mind a frosted spring morning with an aura of dew-laden flowers. Frozen fruit and watery green notes keep the scent crisp while amber and white wood provides a feminine softness.
Seashore scents
So, you want to be a beach bride. To feel the sand between your toes, hear the roar of the waves behind you and have a breathtaking backdrop of the sun setting in a tropical paradise. But the heat can get pretty unbearable on an island. CK One Summer comes to the rescue with a fragrance that doubles up as a cool sea spray to keep you fresh and invigorated despite the blazing heat. The breezy concoction captures the splash of the ocean waves with crisp melon, dewy water fern, sparkling citrus notes and cool musk. Keep your fragrance light because the higher your body temperature, the more potent the scent.
Another perfect beach buddy is Ralph Hot, a scent for the girl who is fun, flirty and sexy. Unlike traditional weddings, beach weddings are casual affairs in which the bride can come dressed in bikini top and shorts. Hot heats things up with a delicious whiff of sensual mocha cream, spicy cinnamon and luscious maple.
Mirror your stunning sunset wedding with the flacon of Lacoste Touch of Sun, bathed in the glow of deep orange and yellow. The energy that radiates from the sun inspires uplifting experiences - dancing on the beach and celebrating the joy of a happy moment. Touch of Sun opens with youthful crisp green notes of bergamot, continues with the queen of fragrances - rose - before settling into a woody-musk base.
How to shop for a fragrance
Karyn Khoury, Estee Lauder's senior vice president of fragrance development, says: "Choose something that makes you feel feminine and pretty. It will be a long day so make sure you choose a fragrance you enjoy wearing and expresses to you the love and happiness of the day."
- Leave your mother or girlfriend at home. Fragrance shopping should be done alone to reflect your true personality and personal choice.
- Spray the perfumes on blotters before you try them on your skin so that you can narrow down your choices to just two or three.
- Don't try too many scents in one day, or too many scents on one hand; otherwise, you'll end up more confused than when you started. If your nose starts tuning out, have a cuppa. The smell of coffee beans helps cleanse your sense of smell.
- It takes 15 minutes for the top note to sink in and an hour for the middle and bottom notes to develop. So, walk away for an hour after spraying before you make your decision.
- Rather than placing your nose to the skin, let it come to you in the air. Wave your wrist so that the fragrance disperses into the air.
How to wear your wedding fragrance
Parfum: As parfum is very concentrated and lasts up to eight hours, it should be used sparingly. Khoury of Estee Lauder finds it most appropriate for the evening.
Eau de parfum (EDP): Lasting four to six hours, EDP should be used on the pulse points only.
Eau de toilette (EDT): Less concentrated than EDP and can be sprayed all over.
Body splash/mist: A very light concentration that can be sprayed all over to lightly scent skin.
- Fragrance should be sprayed on before getting into your wedding dress to avoid staining the dress.
- Don't apply a fragrance immediately after a warm bath as your pores would have dilated leaving you skin more sensitive to the alcohol in your perfume.
- Applying perfume lavishly on the pulse points doesn't make it last longer. It just makes the fragrance overpowering for the first few hours before fading away. Layering - start with a scented bath gel/cream followed by a matching scented body lotion and, finally, a perfume or EDP - helps the scent to last longer. Alternatively, reapply perfume to your pulse points throughout the day.
